So you’re wondering what to buy people for Christmas. We have less than a month and I for one am panicking. If your budget is tight but you’d like to buy the special people in your life something a little bit more luxurious than you can afford why not get down to TK Maxx and hunt out a bargain. As long as people recognise the name or make of the designer gear you buy them they will believe you’ve spent a bomb when really you’ve made friends with Mr Maxx and got a bargain! Try it for those people you’ve not really got a clue what to buy for such as your Gran or your Aunty who lives down south who you hardly see! A nice pair of leather gloves or a designer handbag or scarf would go down a treat and you’ll be regarded as ‘the one who gives the good presents’ which to be honest, it’s always good to be! And just think, if you look a little bit harder and find something that everyone will love you’ll feel all warm inside when they rip open their gift and genuinely love it, rather than the fake smile and an oooooh that you usually get when you give them bubble bath.

Swap things

Posted by Jasmine
November 20th, 2009

There are lots of sites out there at the moment that are promoting swapping things that you don’t want for things you do. Think about it, if you’re moving house and you either need to get rid of stuff that’s not totally ruined, or you haven’t got certain items but you can’t afford to buy them, this is a great idea. Just go onto Google and type in ‘furniture swap’ or ‘swapping sites’ or something similar and you’ll be able to search the adverts for things others are wanting to get rid of, or search the wanted ad’s or place one for something you want to get rid of. It’s brilliant and a real benefit if you’re struggling for essentials like furniture or appliances.

Budget Christmas

Posted by Jasmine
November 16th, 2009

So you’ve got a limited budget and lots of friends and family who you want to get some fabulous presents for this Christmas. Problem? Not so much. If you set a budget and stick to it you can get some really great presents and still afford that amazing party dress for your Christmas do! The best tips would be to scout out places where you will find some unusual gifts such as vintage shops, boutiques and designer outlets like TK Maxx and TJ Hughes where you will come across some unusual finds. It does take a bit longer and you’ll need a good few shopping trips to get things for everyone however it’s worth it. Think about it, you’ll get lots of exercise trekking back and forth, you may discover some amazing places you wouldn’t have gone to before, you’ll give unusual gifts that people wouldn’t necessarily have bought themselves and you’ll save your pennies. Once you get to the age where you can buy what you want, when you want it, Christmas doesn’t really have the appeal it did when you got a fiver pocket money every week. Therefore by buying things for people that they wouldn’t necessarily have bought themselves it a great idea. I once got a candle for Christmas from a friend. This candle cost £12 and I would never have bought myself a candle for £12! It was a novelty and it’s saved for special occasions, what a great gift!

Staple shoes. You need these.

Posted by Jasmine
November 12th, 2009

Most women have various pairs of shoes in their wardrobe that they do not wear. You wear the same 10 pairs over and over again, don’t you? Me too. Taking influence from Gok Wan’s capsule wardrobe, I have come up with the top 10 pairs of shoes that every woman needs. If you have these, there is no occasion you won’t be able to handle;
1 – Simple black flats – ballerina pumps
2 – Black court shoes
3 – Black peep toe heels
4 – Grey/Navy suede heels
5 – Red kitten heels
6 – Pink/Purple/Green/Blue ballerina pumps with embellishment on the toe
7 – Brown leather wedges
8 – Comfortable but stylish ‘trainers’ (for when you have to be doing anything that requires exercise)
9 – Black, Knee high or over the knee boots with a medium heel
10 – Brown calf boots (cowboy, wedge, ruched, etc)
Invest in a pair of each of the above, obviously taking your personal tastes and preferences into account (if you like very high, go very high and if you prefer a platform, go for a platform) however by sticking to this list you will always have a pair of shoes for every occasion. One of the first three should be patent leather , preferably the peep toes or the courts, to give that special outfit some shine!

Christmas Party – revised

Posted by Jasmine
November 9th, 2009

Ok, I know my last post was about going out to buy your Christmas Party dress but I have another angle for you to consider. This will only work if you are one of those people who keep everything. I am a complete hoarder and have dresses from years ago that don’t fit me anymore but are too beautiful to throw away. These dresses are all hidden at the back of my wardrobe in coat bags just in case I am able to fit into them again and this weekend I dug them out and tried them on again. It’s good news! I can fit into a dress I bought on eBay about 10 years ago and I am going to wear it for the Christmas Party. This means I can now buy some fabulous shoes with the money I put aside for the dress! It’s a long shot but it’s definitely worth digging out the amazing dresses you have had from years past and seeing if there’s anything you can do with them. If you have a plain dress, why not sew on some sequins around the neckline, or all over if you have several days and a lot of sequins and you will be bang on trend!

Festive gown

So you’re all panicking right about now about what to wear for this year’s Christmas do. I know this, because i’m doing the same! We’ve got an Oscar’s theme this year so it’s time to search the vintage and charity shops for some perfect bargainous gowns that will have everyone turning green with envy. For me, Affleck’s Palace in Manchester definitely needs exploring. Consider this, you buy a fabulous dress that’s cram packed with sequins or beads (as is the trend of the moment), it costs you a week’s wages and then you turn up at the Christmas do to find your mortal office enemy wearing the same dress. Nightmare. This is not going to happen to me and therefore I shall go vintage. If you have a vintage dress, you know no-one else will be wearing it and therefore you will stand out from the crowd, you know it’s quality and you know that it cost you at least half the price of the one from French Connection or Zara that was ‘just as nice’. I would also try out dress agencies, which are shops in which women cash in their designer gowns and suits that have only been worn once or twice, mostly because they don’t fit anymore or they need the cash. This would be a great idea if your budget is a little tight and you still want to make an impression!

Home Section at the Trafford Centre

Posted by Jasmine
November 3rd, 2009

Last weekend I went to the Trafford Centre in Manchester and ended up wondering into the home section and almost cried with joy at what I found. Considering I have just moved house and have not fully furnished it yet, it was the perfect time to discover a treasure trove of everything I could imagine to make my house fabulous! Now i’m possibly the biggest fan of TK Maxx there is. Seriously, I love it there and always explore the home section, so imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered a whole shop of TK Maxx’s home section including furniture!! There is also a Next and a Marks and Spencer’s dedicated to home furnishing. And the whole place is incredibly grand. It’s like a palace with fountains, palm trees and columns. My housemate and I were in awe and have resolved to go back in the summer to mooch around the shops, sit by the fountains and feel like we’re on holiday, it is honestly that good! We ended up spending thirty pounds each on cushions and wine glasses and have spied several pieces of kooky furniture that we will return for. I could not recommend it more highly and suggest you all get down there and have a look!
